Unveiling the Program:

Established in 2018 through a visionary partnership between the Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) and Kyoto University (KU), this program provides fellowships for esteemed researchers.


Empowering Two Streams:

The program offers a two-way exchange, empowering researchers in both Africa and Japan:

  • African Researchers in Japan:  This stream offers fellowships to scholars affiliated with KU's partner institutions in Africa.  Selected researchers will have the opportunity to conduct research at Kyoto University, immersing themselves in Japan's vibrant academic environment.

  • Japanese Researchers in Africa:  The program also welcomes researchers from Kyoto University who are eager to embark on research projects at partner institutions across Africa.  This fosters knowledge exchange and strengthens scientific ties between the continents.


Tailored Support for Your Research Journey:

The Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program understands the importance of comprehensive support.  Here's what successful applicants can expect:

  • Fellowship Funding:  The program provides financial backing in the form of a generous fellowship. Amounts range from 22,500 to 27,500 Euros per year, pro-rated for shorter durations. This financial support allows researchers to focus on their projects without financial worries.

  • Minimum Stay – Maximum Impact:   The fellowship program offers flexibility, with a minimum stay requirement of six to eight weeks and a maximum duration of one year. This allows researchers to tailor their research stay to their specific project needs.

  • Split Program Option:  For extended research projects, the program even allows fellows to split their time between their home institution and their host institution in Africa or Japan.


Who Can Apply?

The program seeks scholars who are dedicated to fostering collaboration and scientific advancement. Here's a glimpse into the eligibility criteria:

  • Academic Excellence:   This program is open to researchers with a minimum of a Master's degree and a proven track record of academic excellence.

  • Affiliation:  For the African stream, applicants must be affiliated with a university that is a partner institution of Kyoto University.

  • Research Focus:    Projects should be related to African Studies, ensuring a strong alignment with the program's goals of fostering knowledge exchange in this field.

  • Open to All Nationalities:   There are no nationality restrictions for applicants, promoting inclusivity and global collaboration.


How to Apply and Important Dates:

The application process typically opens in late summer. Here's a roadmap to guide you:

  1. Mark Your Calendar:   Stay vigilant! The application deadline usually falls around the end of August.

  2. Complete the UAGM Admissions Process:  If you're an African scholar, ensure you've completed the separate admissions process at your home institution, a partner of Kyoto University.

  3. Scholarship Application Time:  Once you've conquered the UAGM admissions process, dedicate time to complete the scholarship application form, ensuring all required documents are submitted by the deadline.
