Who Can Apply?

This scholarship opportunity is open to top students from countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). There are some exceptions, however, including students applying for specific programs like Advanced LLM degrees and MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, which are open to all nationalities.


Important Eligibility Criteria:

  • Academic Excellence: You must have excelled in your previous studies, typically ranking within the top 10% of your graduating class.

  • Program Choice:  The LExS is applicable to most Master's programs at Leiden University, with a few exceptions like non-advanced LLM and MSc programs at Leiden Law School, and February starting programs in specific Faculties.

  • Nationality:  Generally, non-EEA/EFTA students are eligible. However, exceptions exist for certain programs mentioned above.


Things to Keep in Mind:

  • The LExS is not a full scholarship, and non-EEA recipients will still need to demonstrate sufficient financial resources for visa applications.

  • The scholarship cannot be combined with another full scholarship from an external source, though partial scholarships might be allowed.

  • The LExS is awarded for the entire duration of your Master's program.


How to Apply:

The application process is straightforward:

  1. Apply for Admission:  First things first! Apply online for your desired Master's program at Leiden University and pay the application fee (if applicable).

  2. Check Scholarship Eligibility: Once your program application is submitted, revisit the application portal and navigate to the "Scholarships" section. If eligible for the LExS, it will appear there.

  3. Motivation Letter: Craft a compelling LExS motivation letter (maximum 500 words) explaining why you deserve the scholarship. Submit this document along with your application.

  4. Meet the Deadline: Don't miss out! Ensure your scholarship application is submitted before the designated LExS deadline.

Selection Process and Results:

Faculty selection committees will evaluate applications and nominate LExS recipients within six weeks of the deadline.  You'll be notified of the outcome via email by the end of November (for February programs) or April (for September programs).
