Role Overview

Your Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist at Anthropic, your role will involve:

  • Aligning Models with Human Values: Work on projects that ensure AI models reflect and adhere to human preferences and ethical standards.

  • Interpreting Neural Networks: Gain insights into deep neural networks and develop methods to interpret their behaviors.

  • Developing New Models: Contribute to the creation of innovative models that support our research goals and address key challenges in AI.

  • Collaborating with the Team: Engage in collaborative, data-driven research decisions and contribute to a unified team effort focused on high-impact projects.

Sample Projects

In this role, you may work on projects such as:

  • Red-Teaming Language Models: Design methods to automatically test language models for harmful behaviors.

  • Creating Evaluation Datasets: Develop datasets to assess potential dangerous capabilities of language models, including persuasion or deception.

  • Comparing Transformer Variants: Analyze and compare the computational efficiency of different Transformer models.

  • Interactive Visualizations: Create tools to visualize attention mechanisms between tokens in language models.


Qualifications

Required Experience

  • Research Experience: At least one significant research project related to machine learning where you played a major role.

Preferred Skills

  • Articulation and Communication: Ability to clearly explain the motivations behind your work and communicate findings effectively, including null results.

  • Team Collaboration: Enjoy working in a team environment and making data-driven research decisions.

  • Attention to Detail: Belief that understanding details is crucial for developing a broader vision.

  • Quantitative Science Background: Experience in quantitative science, even if from a different field, is advantageous.


Logistics and Benefits

Work Structure

  • Location Options: Remote-friendly with travel requirements; based in San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City.

  • Hybrid Policy: Expected to be in the office at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more frequent office presence.

Visa Sponsorship

  • We do sponsor visas and will make every effort to assist with visa arrangements if an offer is extended. However, we cannot guarantee sponsorship for every role or candidate.

Compensation

  • Salary Range: $280,000—$625,000 USD annually.
